Trellising: A technique to enhance crop development

We all want to improve the development of our crops, and the best way to achieve this is by implementing the best procedures and techniques. There are various factors to consider, and one technique of great importance is trellising. You may wonder, what is trellising?

Trellising is a technique that aids in the growth and development of plants by supporting them with some form of material, guiding their vertical growth and keeping them upright without touching the ground.

Why is it importan to implement trellising in our crop?

Here are some benefits of implementing this technique:

  1. It provides great support and comfort to the plant, resulting in healthier growth and higher- quality production.
  2. It increases yield by promoting better plant development
  3. It allows for better pest control.
  4. It facilitates pruning and harvesting.
  5. It improves air circulation and light penetration for the plants

There are different techniques for trellising, and here are some of the most common ones:

  • Single or individual: This technique involves supporting each plant with and individual stake using a string or similar material to secure the plant. The stake should be inserted approximately 10 - 20 cm from the plant´s base
  • Mesh Trellising: Also knows as espalier mesh, it is secured with two posts along the row, creates a trellis. It can be installed in various ways using different materials and should be positioned 20-30 cm above the ground
  • A-frame trellising: This technique involves using two supports that cross and join at the top to form an A-frame structure.

The choice of trellising technique depends on several factors such as the specific crop, available space, environmental conditions, and more.

Therefore, don't forget to research and determine the most suitable trellising technique to implement for your crop. By doing so, you will achieve better development for your plants.
